What is massage?

A therapist manipulates the skin, tendons, muscles and ligaments, which can be light and soothing or more vigorous using deep pressure. It can be used for relaxation and to energise and refresh, or to loosen tight muscles and to prevent or treat injury.

I’m a busy teacher with little enough personal time, why should I take time out to have a massage?

“Emma 40, is an assistant secondary headteacher. Most mornings she gets up at 4 to do paperwork, arrives at school for 7.30 and gets home at the earliest around 6pm – often later – despite only teaching 11 hours (half a full timetable) a week. “I probably have around four or five hours sleep a night,” she says. At weekends she tries to have a full day off. She rarely manages it.” The Guardian. Teaching is tough on your body as well as your mind. On your feet all day, bending over desks, crouching or perching on tiny chairs to talk to little ones, curled over desks marking books or slumped in front of a desktop or laptop computer. We all know we’re supposed to sit up straight, our teachers told us often enough, but not many of us do!

What can massage do for me?

Massage will relieve those aches and pains caused by poor posture and muscle tension, and help prevent further pain. It has been shown to ease tension headaches, stress-related insomnia, anxiety and depression, and some digestive disorders. It can help with pain disorders such as fibromyalgia and will aid recovery from sports and soft tissue injuries.

Isn’t massage just an indulgence?

Absolutely not. Many of our clients use massage to help with their mental wellbeing, to reduce stress and ease anxiety as well as treating physical problems. They consider it a vital complementary treatment in recovery from illness or coping with chronic conditions. Once they’ve tried it, clients often return, sometimes on a weekly basis. A massage will leave you relaxed, refreshed and revitalised and ready to get back to school!
